Whew! We finally got rid of some of the dead weight tonight as Lacey Brown has sung her last sappy ballad on the idol stage. Unlike last week’s fiasco, I was in total agreement with the bottom three (Lacey, Paige and Tim) and would have been ok with any of them going home. Paige deserves elimination the least so I’m glad we’ve got her around for at least another week and, hopefully, longer as I can’t imagine she’ll get the boot before Tim does. Anyway, aren’t we all just killing time until the inevitable Crystal/Mike/Siobhan top three trifecta? …more..

Sorry this is late!  My stupid DVR decided to take a night off and just not record the new Project Runway episode.  Luckily I have Lifetime On Demand.  Take THAT, DVR.

We begin this episode with Maya and Mila sitting on a windowsill talking about how every day they’re falling more and more in love with each other.  Aw, that’s sweet.  It’s just a little weird that they look like different-aged versions of the same person. …more..

Do the execs at Coca Cola think we’ve forgotten about their product? Do they think that out in this vast world there is someone who doesn’t know what that brown fizzy liquid is? And lets say that person exists (they don’t), then he/she must in a pretty damn remote location and is certainly not watching American Idol. So, enough with the not-so-subliminal logos during American Idol, Coke! I almost had a seizure from the goddamn Coca Cola logo flashing before my eyes 7000 times within 2 hours. Stop it! Or, so help me God, I will switch over to Fanta! What’s that? Fanta is owned by Coke. Seriously? DAMN IT! …more..

Season 4, Episode 17: “Freeluc.com”
Original airdate: 3/15/10

This week we were treated to a surprisingly uncluttered, straight-forward chapter of Brothers & Sisters.  Of course, I’m still reeling from the Big Love season finale so among the other things I’m currently finding uncluttered are the back of my closet, the plot of Gosford Park and Grey GardensMoving right along…

We open this episode post-coitus, and I’m talking about directly post-coitus; like gasping, breathless giggling and tangled sheets.  Seems a bit unnecessary, but it gets Luc to appear “naked” yet again, so…pass.  …more..

I’m gonna be straight with you America, you messed up. You eliminated Lilly Scott and kept Lacey ‘shaky voice’ Brown! Why? Is it because Lilly looks like Daryl Hannah in Blade Runner? Because we could’ve fixed that, it was so NOT a good enough reason to send one the absolute best performers of the season home. And Todrick and Alex? You toss them but keep Aaron and Tim? Oh, so many wrong choices. The fourth person eliminated was Katelyn, who I wasn’t really crazy about, but was at least more interesting than Paige or Lacey, so I’m inclined to see this one as a mistake too. You’re zero for four America! I think this season just got way less watchable. …more..

This is the season of quirky, indie girls and it’s also the season of, um, how do I put this delicately… candy ass, adorable-in-the-wrong-way, ‘sensitive’ rockers.

Great

Mike – Rocked the house with a committed performance of “This Woman’s Work” by Maxwell. He has a killer R&B voice and even rocked the falsetto. I don’t think anyone can argue with Big Mike’s ascendancy to the top of the group. Week after week he delivers well sung and entertaining performances, he’s the only one in the guy group that is consistently fun to watch. We never have to worry about him screwing up notes or choosing a really dull song, the dude can perform! …more..

Ok, folks, we’re halfway to Bryant Park, and it seems that most of the fat has been trimmed—we’re down to nothing but pretty talented designers.  This season sure does have a lot more talent than last season!

This week’s challenge is announced by Tim Gunn and everyone’s favorite judge Michael Kors at the Michael Kors store in Soho.  They tell the designers that they won’t be going to Mood this week, and, rather, will be shopping solely at a hardware store.  While I do find this exciting, I am a bit confused why they had to go all the way to the Michael Kors store in Soho to find out this news.  What’s the correlation between Michael Kors and hardware stores?  Anyone?  Seems to me the more logical explanation is that Michael Kors worked a little product placement and self-promotion into his Project Runway contract this year and the producers had to follow-through with their deal. …more..

Plot:

The season finale of Big Love sets out to do what every season finale of this show attempts: to show how much one show can accomplish in an hour.  Right away we can say that Lois, Frank, Jodeen, Joey and Sarah do not appear in the episode, while Ben, Cara Lynn and Wanda barely speak and Alby is relegated to a few short scenes.  It’s saying something that you can remove seven series regulars and two major guest stars from the arc of your show and still deliver an hour that feels overstuffed and rushed.  I’m just saying.  Aaaaanyway…I’ll save the commentary (and the news of why I am ANGRY at this episode) for later.  …more..

10 women entered the Coco Cola Vitamin Water Aural Delight Auditorium and only 8 will make it out alive! I have no further introductory statements so let’s just get to the singers:

Great

Crystal Bowersox – She became The One To Beat tonight. She overcame her illness (which according to the interwebs is Diabetes) and totally rocked a gospel inspired rendition of “As Long As I Can See the Light” by Credence Clearwater Revival. She is classy, cool and -best of all- didn’t play the sympathy card at all. She didn’t need to, she has some killer pipes. The judges loved her so much that Randy stopped using his words and blathered something incomprehensible about reality TV and truth and how Crystal is truth because she lives in reality. The ladies were scheduled to sing but Crystal Bowersox is in the hospital and couldn’t go on tonight. It’s a bummer that she’s ill and I hope she’ll be well enough to rock the house tomorrow night. Luckily the guys were ready to perform and actually, on a whole, they did a much better job than last week – they really stepped it up tonight. Most of them sang much better this week, all of them seemed to have shaken off those nerves that were killing them last time. How they managed to shake off the nervousness that comes from having 20 million people watch you sing is beyond me, but hey, that’s why I’m on the couch and they’re in the Coca Cola Song Coliseum. …more..

Well, I threatened to say it last week, and now I have to follow through: Brothers & Sisters is having a total late-season creative rejuvenation.  While I’m not going to say that this episode reached the heights of the last two, this was still a flat-out solid episode of television; David Marshall Grant, it looks like you and I are going to get along just fine.

Look, any time that the writers and producers of this show manage to make me care about Justin and Rebecca two weeks in a row, they’re on a tear.  They’ve been on point with the whole handling of this miscarriage; it’s been quiet and subtle, without any of the over-the-top drama that has been the hallmark of this show since the de-Walkering of Rebecca in Season Two.  …more..

They share the same dream…this was the opportunity they longed for but their destiny is unclear…all will be fighting to secure their spot in history”

Okay Seacrest, calm down. How about we bring the hyperbole down 5 or 6 notches.

I have another confession to make. I’ve never seen an elimination episode of Idol. I have seen season finales, does that count? It’s just that the idea of watching bloated, Seacrest-heavy, embarrassing-group-routine featuring episodes breaks my soul a little. I hate the idea of spending an hour watching something that should take 10 minutes. But tonight I did it, I did it for y’all… and you know what? It wasn’t so bad. Sure, the top 24 singing “American Boy” was pretty awful. That song already sounds like a cheesy Manilow throw away even when Estelle sings it, adding the uninspired vocal styling’s of Didi Benami and Alex Lambert doesn’t help. …more..

While this year’s batch of boys is noticeably weaker in talent than the ladies, there are still a few strong contenders in the mix and I’m hoping for a surprise or two to emerge as the season progresses (I’m lookin’ at you Big Mike). I know this is gonna be a fun night because Randy broke out the Cosby sweater, Simon looks like the cover of a middle aged romance novel, and Kara took some time off from her post-apocalyptic motorcycle gang to be here with us… Ellen is the only one who didn’t dress like an embarrassing parent. Big Love

Plot Summary:

Big Love finally started to bring some of it’s spiraling plot-lines together last night, most significantly Lois and Co’s ill-fated trip south of the border.

The show opens with Bill and Joey heading to Mexico…clearly, Bill has received word that his family has landed in the soup, and just as clearly he has chosen not to share the information with his wives, as Barb harangues him on the phone that she can’t take care of the casino and the campaign alone.  Bill feeds her a story about going to nail down contracts for Home Plus, and then he and Joey meet up with Jodean in Mexico and go to the local police.  I’m not certain how Jodean escaped capture last week, but she’s free, and she quickly reveals to Joey that not only was Lois smuggling birds, but Frank was using the trip to smuggle guns.  When the local police prove to be less then helpful, and when Bill’s expected arrogance rears it’s ugly head, they prove less than sympathetic as well.  …more..

The main plot tonight swirled around Kitty and the announcement of her run for Robert’s Senate seat.  Cheryl Hines made her return as Kitty’s frenemy, the unfortunately named Buffy McCreary (a name never more frustrating than when Robert and Kitty said “Buffy” about seven times in a row, and I started looking for a stake to fight the vampires), and strong-arms her way into the job of Kitty’s campaign manager.  …more..

How does American Idol get away with it? How do reality shows get their major ratings with crap like this week’s episodes? Every scripted show -no matter how trite or poorly written- at least presents you with 30 to 60 minutes of actual plot, character development, hacky jokes, etc. Why? Because they HAVE to! No scripted show is allowed to take 13 minutes of actual show and somehow drag it out over three goddamn hours of schlock. How American Idol fills half its season with the most useless waste of TV airtime since Ross Perot took to the airwaves and STILL manages to get the highest ratings in all the land is a mystery worthy of Nancy Drew. …more..

We begin the episode with Derek, Meredith, Owen, and Cristina in Derek’s car, presumably on their way to a Valentine’s Day double date.  This is weird to me, as I just don’t see any of these people as the Valentine’s Day double date types.  Naturally, this detour into conformity doesn’t last long, because a restaurant has collapsed and the docs are needed back at the hospital to help out with the emergency.  There are lots of sub-stories about the victims of the building collapse, but we’ll just focus on our favorite doctors and their always drama-filled lives. …more..

Often, while I’m watching Private Practice, I sit there and wonder just what the hell was going through the writers’ heads when they decided a certain storyline would be a good idea.  Well, this week that happened more than once.

The first storyline that had me rolling my eyes was the vampire plot.  Ok, I get that vampires are a big part of pop culture right now, what with Twilight and The Vampire Diaries and True Blood and whatnot, but why on earth did Private Practice feel the need to jump on the bandwagon?  You can just see the writers sitting around a big table going, “Ohh, yeah, vampires!  That’s topical!  We’re hip!”  Gimme a break.  …more..

Group day is always such an entertaining episode in the American Idol season calendar. It’s the chance to watch people with enough confidence/ego to imagine themselves as the next Great Big American Star as they attempt to work well with others… and the results are usually a hoot. The high drama and even higher hysteria must be why the producers do it because it doesn’t really move the elimination process much, as evidenced by the fact that the judges only cut 25 people out of 96. We gotta whittle this group down to 24 hopefuls, judges. Lets get a move on! …more..

Every season on Project Runway, there’s a “Very Special Episode.”  You know, like the Very Special sitcom episodes of yore.  Well, this week is that episode… but it all seems a little weird this time around.  The designers must create outfits for “very inspirational women.”  They tell us a million times that these women are very inspirational.  They have all been affected by heart disease.  Yes, I agree that, like all life-threatening illnesses, heart disease is a terrible thing to have to deal with.  But I don’t know if these women are very inspirational.  What are they inspiring me to do?  Not get heart disease?  Well, I wasn’t aiming to do that anyway.  …more..

I usually hate flashbacks (I’m more of a “let’s get the story moving forward; who cares about what happened in the past” kinda gal), but on The Vampire Diaries, I love flashbacks.  Not only are the flashbacks just as entertaining as everything else that goes on on the show, but they fill in the details and spaces and answer our questions.  So, let’s focus first on the flashbacks….

Mystic Falls, 1864:

Even though Katherine hasn’t changed Stefan or Damon yet, she’s showing them the ropes of vampire life.  Her friend Pearl comes to warn Katherine that the townspeople are growing wise to the fact that vampires are around.  And, of course, both Jonathan Gilbert and Giuseppe Salvatore (played by Sex and the City and Dexter star James Remar!!) are leading the hunt.  …more..

Episode 6
Original airdate: 2/8/10

Yes, this week was hometown dates and yes, I will use any opportunity to quote the Guns ‘n Roses masterwork, “Paradise City.”

First stop: Motherf-ing New York City!  Gia’s hometown, though I’ve heard that she’s actually from Long Island, but whatever.  I grew up in a town that is just outside of Boston (exact location: somewhere between the fifth and sixth circles of hell), but I tell people I’m from Boston to keep it simple.  Either way, NBC can’t resist shots of the NYC skyline and Jake can’t resist Gia’s sweet nature and equally (supposedly) awkward childhood.  Her family is a delightful combination of Jersey Shore/The Sopranos and Jake seems a bit bewildered.  Gia’s relationship with her mother is super sweet, though.  Their talk about having each others backs and the importance of loyalty really struck me and actually got me choked up.  I had had a long day and was drinking red wine, mmmmK?  …more..

Season 9, Episode 9
Original airdate: 2/9/10

American Idol

Well it’s about time. We’ve finally landed at the Kodak Theater for round one of the Vitamin Water Singing Talent Jamboree™ where the judges whittle down the contestants from 181 to 90-something (I wasn’t paying attention) in a ‘sudden death’ round that’s not at all ‘sudden death’ and really just more of a plain old ‘audition’. The big story tonight is the addition of Ellen DeGeneres who is taking over for Drunky McGee in the role of ‘Nice Judge’. She is also bringing some of the humor lost when Drunky left, of course it will be different in that we’ll mostly be laughing with Ellen and not so much at her. …more..

Yay, a Taye Diggs-centric episode!  He’s sure got a lot goin’ on.  So much, in fact, that I’m not even going to waste any time talking about the B and C storylines of the episode.

Dink (whose real name, we find out, is Fillmore!) comes to the office to ask Sam for Maya’s hand in marriage.  Whoa.  These kids are FIFTEEN YEARS OLD.  I know she’s pregnant and all that, and that’s a pretty shitty situation, but allowing these kids to get married would be doubling the shittyness of the whole predicament.  I mean, seriously.  Pregnancy or no, there is NO reason to get married at fifteen.  End of story. …more..
